Curling -- Have You Tried It?
Feb 4, 2010

...it's one of the very best ever winter sports! Great team play. Fun social -- and, even though it's on ice, you get to play it inside! This week, we're watching some fabulous curling at the Scott Tournament of Hearts event.  It brings the best ladies teams together from every province in Canada. Wonderful  to watch their energy and skill on the ice.

Later this month, McBlooms is a sponsor at a Toronto Curling event -- the Toronto Curling Association's Mixed Curling Bonspiel  (www.torontocurling.com).    Each player will be receiving a tube of our best selling Extremely Rich Cream -- with aromatics for the ladies and fragrance free for the guys.  Curlers love this product for soothing and softening dry, chapped skin -- especially their hands, which get so dry when they are exposed to those drying on ice conditions.

We wish the Toronto Curling Association players "Good Curling!" in their annual event -- and may the best team win!

I love to curl when time permits.  A number of years ago, I was given the opportunity to play with one of Canada's best curlers, Sherry Middaugh (www.teammiddaugh.com) but - alas - I had to pass. Priorities!  I had to take my young son to his hockey game!

Inside and out -- Canada's winter with all of our great sports (and this month with the Winter Olympics in Vancouver!!)  -- you've gotta love it!

GO CANADA GO!!!

January - The coldest month of the year...
Jan 15, 2010

Is it ever cold outside!!! A lot of us are saying the same thing!!! It doesn’t seem to matter where you are on this continent – north, south, east, west…. bbrrrrr.* And lots of snow.  It’s terrific for bundling up and getting out there and having some good old fashioned winter fun.

But here in Toronto we have had next to no snow yet -- this is so very different than the last couple of years where deep snow landed early and stayed around all winter. So today, despite the temperature, I got a head start on early spring garden activities.  I went out and took down our twinkling holiday lights and other decorations. Without all that snow, it was so easy to move around!

Then I headed back inside to warm up, grabbed a cup of green tea and went on line to waysidegardens.com to order one of the best-ever garden catalogues – it’s a classic! You can spend hours with this catalogue, dreaming and planning your garden on these cold winter nights!

Wayside Gardens was started in the 1920’s and has grown and flourished over the years. It offers so many unusual, high end plants “for the serious garden enthusiast”.  And of course it offers “superior plants and the highest levels of quality”.  If you have a moment, take a look at this site with its beautiful images of interesting plants.  It is also loaded with information too – including a lot of what you need to know to become a serious gardener!

*One rare exception is British Columbia’s Whistler – we need to get the temperature to drop there so that all that rain can turn to snow as we count down to next month’s Olympics -- I have no doubt that is just about to happen…

Recharging Inside & Out
Dec 8, 2009

I found the opportunity to escape to sunny Southwest Florida last week for a bit of rest and relaxation before the December Holiday rush.

What a wonderful few days under that November sun!! First thing each morning, I made a big mug of green tea and headed out to the beach -- such a calming way to start the day. Along with that good healthy walk, before I knew it, I was bending and stretching and doing the “Sanibel Stoop” – stopping every few feet and bending over and picking up shells. There are so many different varieties of shells --  from the garden of the sea -- in one of the best shelling locations in the United States and possibly the world. Copy and paste the following link to your browser for more information -- http://videos.howstuffworks.com/howstuffworks/26080-florida-beaches-the-sanibel-stoop-video.htm -- If you are looking for a really nice place to go for a quiet, back to nature few days, Sanibel Island (www.sanibelisland.com) is an excellent choice.

There were a lot of people out walking and jogging on the beach early in the day.  What a great, natural exercise for the body and spirit.

Note to Self: That walk along the beach is a real treat for feet! That combination of sand and salt water under each step works wonders for scrubbing up and softening the feet – it’s really the first step in a great pedicure!

After that most welcome break, I’m back in Toronto, spending a little more time inside, back at the McBlooms workshop as we start our Holiday Open House and get ready for Holiday festivities with family and friends.

If you have a moment, drop us a line and tell us what recharges your body and spirit at this busy time of year – we’d love to hear from you!

Autumn Colours and Falling Leaves -- It's Time to Get the Garden Ready for Winter
Nov 10, 2009

November!  What happened to October??!  From our Canadian Thanksgiving and Hallowe’en celebrations to those amazing Fall colours – what a fast and furious and glorious month it has been!

Our cool, rainy summer resulted in our trees growing large, lush, healthy leaves that, combined with a fairly rainy, overcast mild autumn has given us the most beautiful, long lasting Fall display of colour that we have seen in years!

Here it is, the first week in November and, in our neighbourhood, some of the leaves are still on the trees -- although their colours have mellowed from crimsons and bright oranges to softer yellows and golds.  What makes the leaves change from rich, bright greens in the first place? Weather.com www.esf.edu/pubprog/brochure/leaves/leaves.htm gives an easy-to read explanation!

Over the past two or three weeks, I have been outside in the garden for an hour or two at a time pulling out the annuals and pruning back the flowering perennials. Today, I have taken some of our fallen leaves and packed them around the base of our smaller trees and bushes – especially the not-quite-as-hardy rhododendrons and azaleas. This will give them a nice warm blanket to help insulate their roots from the snow and ice this winter.

(I made sure that the leaves are healthy and don’t show signs of fungus or pests which could easily transfer to my plants.)

Next, my plan is to empty the mums and pumpkins out of the pots at our front door and by the back gate. Then I’m off to the country to gather up red twigs from Canada’s native red dogwood. They are the first cutting I’ll put in my pots to get them ready for their winter display.

But before I head out, I’m heading inside for a cup of hot green tea and pecan shortbread. www.barefootcontessa.com/recipes/tbcc-1.shtml

Note to Self: Now is the time to jot down what worked and what didn’t in this year’s garden – ie., that lobelia looked lovely at the nursery, but it really didn’t do too well along my back wall (too little sun??) and my bearded irises really grew this year and look jammed in the perennial bed.  Next June I must divide the roots (rhizomes) about two weeks after they flower to give them a chance to spread out and breathe again! And those viburnums will need a good prune…

Next week, we’ll be filling our planter at McBlooms with green dogwood twigs as we start to get ready for our 9th Annual Open House on December 3 and 4. If you live in the Toronto area and would like to come – please put it on your calendar -- we’d love to see you! Just give us a call at 877 792 5666 or email jacalyn@mcblooms.com for more information.

Sunflowers Are It!!!
Oct 1, 2009

Everywhere I look this Fall, I see sunflowers! Flower shops. Green Grocers. Fall Festivals. Backyards. T-shirts. Posters. Greeting cards…

Sunflowers really lift the spirit! Their bright, bold but comfortable, sunny heads signal happiness and good cheer. But it doesn’t stop there – this flower is not just a pretty face. Like most of us these days, it is a real multi-tasker – both inside and out…

…the seeds are delicious and nutritious. They make a great snack – chock full of vitamins E and B1 as well as other important nutrients.

…the oil – polyunsaturated! – is great for cooking. It is also used in cosmetics and skincare products.

…the flowers make fabulous indoor arrangements.

…outdoors, the bright colour attracts the birds and the seeds feed the squirrels.

…and it’s striking beauty has made it a favourite art subject.  Vincent Van Gogh painted it many times.  See what London’s National Gallery has to say about his most famous painting, Sunflowers. http://www.nationalgallery.org.uk/paintings/vincent-van-gogh-sunflowers

At McBlooms, we use sunflower seed oil in a number of our natural skincare products.  It is a wonderful emollient.  It smoothes the skin without clogging pores. It also helps the skin retain moisture – so critical as we head into our North American winter!!

Note to self:  Next Spring, set aside a patch in our garden to grow sunflowers.

It will be quite easy to do.  I will start the seeds indoors in individual peat pots about 3 weeks before the last frost date. Then I’ll plant the seedlings outdoors in our nice loamy – not too sandy – garden soil, so that they can spread their roots deep and wide to give them a good anchor.   I’ll plant them so that they will get almost full day sun. I’ll feed them a balanced fertilizer and then I’ll give them a little extra phosphorus and potassium when the flower buds begin to develop, to encourage  a larger flower head.  I will be able to harvest the flower heads in September –some for the seeds, some for arranging.

But I can’t wait until next year!  So I’m off to visit Vanderfleet, our local florist. Guess what’s going on our Thanksgiving table this year! http://www.vanderfleet.com/

Happy (Canadian) Thanksgiving and Happy October everyone. Enjoy this wonderful month --  whatever your plans – inside and out.

Wendy

Welcome!
Aug 27, 2009

September!  The start of a whole new Fall season – and with it, our new website. We’re finally up and running and we’re excited to show everyone our new product line-up – it’s greener than ever and better than ever!

For visitors to our site who already know McBlooms – welcome back!! You’ll still recognize those “creams that really work” and yes -- they are still available both with our popular aromatics scent and fragrance free.  And we do appreciate your patience over these past few months as we have revamped our products and packaging.

For visitors to our site who are new to McBlooms – welcome!! We’re glad you’ve found us!

When we first set out to re-vamp McBlooms, I had no idea that it would take so long, with so many twists and turns along the way. Weeks turned into months – in fact, we have spent most of this year ‘tweaking’ our formulations to deliver what consumers want today – products that are paraben and SLS (“bad stuff”) free – and more natural and organic than ever. Today, we are all seeking out products that are more gentle and safer for our skin and our bodies – and products and packaging that are kinder to our environment. Simply stated, we want products that are better for us – inside and out.

OK, time now for me to help pack up some orders inside – before I take a break and head back out to soak up some of this glorious early September weather!! I hope you too will take a pause from time to time over the next few weeks to enjoy a slice of this delicious month of September.

Cheers!

Wendy
